Tapescript:

If you ask many British pop musicians about major influences on their careers, the name that inevitably comes up is John Peel. Since he first started working for the BBC thirty-five years ago, John has promoted the careers of literally thousands of unknown musicians by playing the recordings they send into him or inviting them into the BBC studios to record. From the hundreds of CDs, tapes and records he receives from all over the world each week, John picks out tracks to play on his programme, which offers an amazing mixture of musical styles with everything from hip hop and electronica to heavy metal, garage and reggae. The John Peel Show goes out three times a week on BBC Radio One and the World Service. It attracts the highest percentage of listeners under the age of sixteen of any BBC programme – quite an achievement when you realize that John himself is in his sixties. He says the secret of his success is that he has never made the mistake of pretending to be the same age as his audience, something that many DJs do. In his opinion, his fans like the show so much because they are basically like him – completely open-minded about music and this, he says, is a healthy attitude to have at any age.
John was born in Liverpool, the home of The Beatles and many other sixties groups, but he actually spent very little of his childhood and adolescence there. He was away at a boys’ boarding school from the age of seven and came back to Liverpool only for his holidays. Nevertheless, he still thinks that it might have been his accent that got him his first job on the radio.
When British listeners first heard John Peel’s voice in September 1967, the BBC had just launched its pop music station known as Radio One. John, who has spent six years as a DJ in the United States, first in Dallas, Texas and then in Oklahoma and San Bernardino, California, was given a six-week contract. Today he is the only one of the original Radio One DJs still broadcasting on the same station. Many of the others now work on television, which is something John says he has never wanted to do. He loves radio, particularly music radio and says he would rather do what he is actually doing than anything else. Not many people can say that after thirty-five years in the same job, can’t they?

Raspuns posibil :

Many people think that there is too much emphasis on sport and celebrities in the media. However, I don’t entirely agree with this opinion.
In my opinion, sport plays an important part in many people’s lives. Playing sport keeps us healthy and is very exciting to watch on TV. Moreover, watching a sport on TV often encourages us to start playing it.
Our attitude to TV programmes and news stories about celebrities, on the other hand, should be different. There are no good reasons for being so interested in these people who are, moreover, often not very intelligent and even unpleasant. From my point of view, there are much more important things to be concerned about.
To sum up, there is too much emphasis on celebrities but not on sport. Sports programmes can be interesting and beneficial. However, programmes about celebrities are a waste of time.
